Fast Facts on the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Scorecard

  • The Department of Management Services and the Department of Environmental Protection determined the level of greenhouse gas emissions using the GHG Protocol Initiative methodology for corporate greenhouse gas accounting. Developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, this methodology is the most widely used framework globally for measuring greenhouse gas emissions.
  • State agencies produced an estimated 899,107 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the 2006-2007 fiscal year. When compared statewide, that is less than one percent (.34) of the total 265 million metric tons produced in Florida in 2004.
  • The total CO2 emissions from state agencies is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions from 164,672 passenger cars, electricity usage for 119,087 households, or the consumption of 2,090,947 barrels of oil.
  • Of the total, 84 percent came from facilities and 16 percent from vehicles.
  • Eighty five percent of the CO2 emissions from facilities came from electricity use and the remaining 15 percent from use of fuels like natural gas, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas.
  • More than 80 percent of the total reported CO2 emissions are produced by nine of the 34 agencies participating in this baseline assessment.
  • Of the 899,107 metric tons of CO2 emissions in FY 06-07, 818,774 metric tons (91 percent) were from state agencies' vehicle and facilities under their operational control and will be the focus of GHG emission reduction efforts.
